****Travel Competitive Soccer is overseen by Madison United. If you are interested in learning more about Madison United, click here.
When and where are the evaluations and tryouts?
Evaluations for MYSA, both boys and girls teams, are held the first or second week of March for non-travel players in age brackets of U-12 through U-18. Check the home page for your specific season and the calendar page on our website for specific times and locations.
Does the player have to attend all tryout days?
In order to obtain a fair evaluation, attendance at all sessions is recommended. If a player is unable to attend a tryout, they must contact the coach and make alternate arrangements if available.
Will the club schedule additional tryout days?
If it is approved by the Director of Coaching, additional tryout days may occur. A tryout day is shortened because of inclement weather or if the evaluators need more time, some or all players may be called back.
What if the player is sick, injured or otherwise cannot attend tryouts?
Contact the registrar and a coach immediately. Coaches will try to make arrangements to evaluate the player at another time.
Who can try out?
A soccer player (U11 and above) will be evaluated for the age group that corresponds to his or her birth date. In rare occasions, upon recommendation of the Director of Coaching and approval of the board, a U10 player may be allowed to try out. This will be handled upon a case-by-case basis.
Please see age chart. (NEED LINK)
How does a player register for tryouts?
Go to our online registration site at www.rexburgsoccer.org and select which tryout you wish to do. Then select the link and register. There are no fees charged to try out. Registration must be completed before a player is allowed to attend tryouts, this is in order for the player to be properly listed and insured. Once teams are selected you will have 5 days to accept your position and pay your fees. We accept payments online via VISA or MasterCard.
What will be the financial commitment?
$150.00, which includes the cost of the uniform.
Are there any other expectations of the player or family?
All parents of MYSA players are expected to commit their voluntary efforts in some capacity in support of the club and their child's team. Each team must have a Manager. Other volunteer opportunities for teams include assistant manager, finance manager, coach, team photographer, equipment manager, field marshal, field preparation, fundraising and team board representative. Volunteer opportunities for the club as a whole include fundraising, camps, publicity, registration, website, newsletter, planning, promotion, sponsorship and board membership. Many volunteer opportunities will arise from the discussions and decisions made at the monthly board meetings.
What can the player expect at evaluations and tryouts?
Arrive at least fifteen minutes before the beginning of tryouts to check in. Be dressed ready to play. Bring cleats, shin guards, soccer socks, a ball, and a water bottle. Check in and get a number. Our club uses numbers, instead of full names, to give the players anonymity, in order to make tryouts fair and impartial. After receiving a number, find your age level and stretch out. Evaluators will begin the tryout once all players have been checked in and they have received their tryout rosters. Roll will be called. It is the player's responsibility to try out in the correct age group. Please speak with your evaluator if you are not sure if you are in the correct age group. Family members are asked to leave the fields after check-in and not watch tryouts, so that players are not distracted and may concentrate on their performance. The tryout will run for the time scheduled. Players should meet their parents near the registration table beside the parking lot.
When are the teams announced?
After try outs, team selections will be posted on our web site and players will be notified within 10 days. Players will have 48 hours from notification to confirm they want to commit to the team and pay their team fees; otherwise their slot will be given to another player.
What if a player decides not to play?
If a player drops after team selection and final rosters are submitted to Idaho Youth Soccer Association (IYSA), he or she will not be allowed to register and play with the club for one year. Significant work and time is spent in forming these teams. It is a major problem to reorganize the affected teams. Refunds will not be issued.
What follows team formation?
Coaches may develop a specific conduct and commitment policy for their team. Parent team meetings will be scheduled prior to practices. Parents and players are encouraged to check the website regularly at www.rexburgsoccer.org.
MADISON YOUTH SOCCER ASSOCIATION (MYSA) - FALL School Based Information
Fall school based coaches and teams will be chosen in two different ways. Based upon numbers, the school-based teams will be chosen by having some purely competitive teams and some purely development teams.
Example: If there are enough players for four teams in a certain age category, there will be two competitive teams and two developmental teams.
Competitive Teams: The top two teams will be designated as competitive teams (A and B). They are purely competitive based and selected upon athletic ability, technical skill, tactical understanding, and mental/social maturity of and commitment to the game. They will generally play in the highest division. They will be referred to as the “A” team and the “B” team.
Developmental Teams: The other two teams will be referred to as developmental teams and will be designated as the "C" team and "D" team respectively. Every attempt will be made to make these two developmental teams equally mixed. They will generally play in the lowest division.
MADISON YOUTH SOCCER ASSOCIATION (MYSA) - SPRING Information
Spring MYSA coaches and teams will be based upon the recreational enjoyment of soccer and fun. There will be room for everyone to make the team. If there are enough players for more than one team in an age category, there will be every attempt made to make these two developmental teams equally mixed. They will generally play in the lowest recreational division.
What's the Difference between MYSA and MADISON UNITED, F.C. - Winter and Spring Travel Teams Specific Information
Travel team rosters for Madison United, F.C. are selected around October/November. Travel teams consist of purely competitive players. Development players are encouraged to play in the recreational spring league, which is focused on development and fun. For example, in order to form a travel team, there must be a sufficient number of players and coaches with experience to play at that level. Otherwise, the team will be encouraged to register as a recreational team and will not attend tournaments. Madison United travel players and teams are purely competitive based and are selected based upon athletic ability, technical skill, tactical understanding, and mental/social maturity of and commitment to the game.
UVSF Tryout Selection Process for both Madison United, F.C. and MYSA (total process expected to take two weeks).
Step 1 – Coaches prepare the Player Evaluation Form
All coaches from the previous season rank their players on their technical skills, defending ability, tactical awareness attendance, and practice behavior. The coach submits their observations via a Player Evaluation Form to the Director of Coaching. This form may be shared with the evaluators at the tryouts.
Step 2 – Tryout Schedule is Announced
A tryout schedule defining the time, location and age group is defined and announced to all members of the soccer club via email and posted on the website. Each tryout will last about two hours. A second tryout session may be schedule if deemed necessary by the Director of Coaching or Board of Directors.
Step 3 – Interested Boys and Girls Register and Attend the Tryouts
Players - All interested players must either per-register or sign in on the day of the Tryout. It is to the benefit of the player to attend the session. If he/she cannot attend the session, he/she should notify the club registrar during registration. During registration, each player is assigned a numbered pinnie, a number on their arm may be written, or some other identifying marker.
Coaches - All coaches are also asked to submit an application via the web portal for consideration. Coach selections are not made until after player tryouts. Coaches understand that they are not tied to any particular team. Please note that coaches are nominated and approved by the Director of Coaching, subject to review by the Board of Directors as desired, each year and no coach is guaranteed a position for future seasons. Unless otherwise desired by the Board of Directors, the Director of Coaching oversees the nomination and approval process.
Step 4 – Tryout Forms are Distributed
Each evaluator is given a copy of a tryout form. Each candidate’s “assigned Number” is printed on the form.
Step 5 – Commence
Evaluators observe the players during the different playing scenarios including small-sided games and large scale scrimmages. Players are selected based upon athletic ability, technical skill, tactical understanding, and mental/social maturity of and commitment to the game. Players are scored on a 1 through 3 point evaluation, with 1 being the highest and 3 being the lowest.
Step 6 – Tryouts are Completed
After the try out is completed, the evaluators convene and discuss rankings on what they have seen and written about each player. The evaluators meet to discuss the tryouts and, under the direction of the Director of Coaching, put together the team rosters. The Director of Coaching collects all the forms, Player Evaluator Form and all of the evaluator’s input.
Step 7 –Roster Approval Process
The Director of Coaching, and his committee if applicable, puts the team rosters together on paper and submits it to the Board of Directors for approval. Unless the Board of Director objects, the team rosters and coaching assignments become final within 24 hours of submission by the Director of Coaching. In exigent circumstances, these assignments can be changed, as necessary by the Director of Coaching, subject to approval by the President of the Board.
The Director of Coaching may elect to form a sub-committee to help with the tryout process.
Step 8 – Team Rosters Posted and Teams Publicly Announced. (Ten days from tryout)
Players who made the team will be publicly announced but coaches will not yet be announced.
Step 9 – Coach Selection
All coaches will be selected, nominated, and approved by the Director of Coaching, subject to review by the Board of Directors as desired, each year and no coach is guaranteed a position for future seasons. The criteria for selection is set forth below. Unless otherwise desired by the Board of Directors, the Director of Coaching oversees the nomination and approval process. After tryouts and just before players are notified of their team assignment, accepted coaches will be notified of their selection and invited to the Coaches Meeting.
*Please do not communicate with your team, other than a positive salutation, until after you have attended the coaches meeting.
Step 10 – Coach Meeting(s)
Tryout procedures and coaches responsibilities are discussed in this meeting. Attendance of this meeting is a requirement for all coaches (Head and Assistant). Check out the club calendar for the date and time. There will be a minimum of three coaches meetings/training sessions during the fall and/or spring season respectively as follows: (1) One meeting/training session at the beginning of the season. (2) One meeting/training session during the midpoint of the season and one meeting/training session at the end of the season. (3) The end of the season meeting will be a closing dinner/dessert social provided by the club, in part to thank the coaches for their efforts.
Step 11 – Final Rosters Posted and Teams Publicly Announced. (Projected Completion - 14 to 21 days from the tryout date).
It is at this point that final teams and coaching staffs will be announced on the web and coaches may openly communicate with their players and teams.
Coach Selection Process
Madison United and MYSA encourage interested parents and friends to submit an online coaching profile through our web portal if you would like to be considered for the role of Head Soccer Coach or Assistant Coach. Madison United FC selects coaches in the fall for winter/spring/summer travel teams and MYSA selects coaches each spring and each fall for non-travel soccer league play. The Coaches are responsible to contact and welcome assigned players, give input on choosing Assistant Coaches (subject to approval by the Director of Coaching), set the practice schedule, set the tone for the team, organize and run practices, oversee the team on the field during games, and evaluate players after each season. In an ideal situation each team will be assigned a coach early enough so that the coach will be identified to players when they are informed of their team assignment.
The Coach Selection Process will be advertised as widely as possible, so that every interested parent and friend is aware of the opportunity to be considered. The process is intended to identify and select the most appropriate Coach for each team.
In order to review Coach candidates and have Coaches in place by the time rosters are selected, we request that coaches indicate their interest in coaching as soon as possible and the selection will be made by the Director of Coaching. Prospective Coaches must provide a summary of their experience and their qualifications, either by answering questions on the website or through an interview. Those who choose to apply will receive a follow-up phone call/e-mail/text or letter after the information has been reviewed and that they have either been selected or not selected.
At this stage, there is no commitment on the part of Madison United, F.C. or MYSA to assign an applicant to a team.
Evaluating Prospective Coaches
Coaches are expected to be strong in three areas:
A. They must enjoy young people and be able to develop good working relationships;
B. They must be able to coach, teach and train others;
C. They must enjoy and have an acceptable level of proficiency at coaching the game of soccer, technically, tactically, physically, and mentally.
Choosing Coaches
As noted, the Director of Coaching will select Coaches who are the best fit for a particular team. The following criteria will be considered:
· Previous experience coaching soccer (travel or in-town)
· License courses
· Previous experience playing soccer (high school, college, adult league)
· Willingness to commit to building good fundamental skills for every player on the team by providing organized and progressive training
· Input from High School Boy’s and Girl’s coaches.*Heavy weight given to this factor
· Ability to work well with children
· Feedback from players and parents on previous teams
Not any one of these factors is conclusive on it’s own. Rather all of these factors will be considered in the decision making process and weighed carefully by the Director of Coaching and other committee members that the may be appointed to help.
Excellence as a player does not equate to excellence as a coach. Madison United is looking for individuals who want to be more than coaches; they want to be soccer teachers. Coaches teach you what to do on the field. Soccer teachers impart life lessons through soccer such as good decision-making, fair play, teamwork, and sportsmanship that are applicable in everyday life. Appreciation of soccer can be learned; affinity for young people is a more difficult quality to master.
Madison Youth Soccer Assocation (MYSA) is the non-travel recreational soccer league for youth in Rexburg from 11 to 18 years of age.
1. It oversees a Fall school based soccer program for Madison middle school and junior high school students.
2. It also oversees Rexburg's Winter Futsal / Indoor Soccer League.
