Coaching
Why Volunteer
Upper Valley Soccer Foundation, along with Madison Youth Soccer Association and Madison United is an all-volunteer organization. We service more youth in Rexburg than any other sport, currently servicing over 350 kids every year and growing. You don’t need to know anything about soccer to help out.
Surely you remember an adult volunteer in your youth that helped you with scouts, dance, sports or was a friend to your family when you were in need. Being a volunteer keeps that service alive in your heart and family.

Evaluating Prospective Coaches
Coaches are expected to be strong in three areas:
A. They must enjoy young people and be able to develop good working relationships;
B. They must be able to coach, teach and train others;
C. They must enjoy and have an acceptable level of proficiency at coaching the game of soccer, technically, tactically, physically, and mentally.
Choosing Coaches
As noted, the Director of Coaching will select Coaches who are the best fit for a particular team. The following criteria will be considered:
· Previous experience coaching soccer (travel or in-town)
· License courses
· Previous experience playing soccer (high school, college, adult league)
· Willingness to commit to building good fundamental skills for every player on the team by providing organized and progressive training
· Input from High School Boy’s and Girl’s coaches.*Heavy weight given to this factor
· Ability to work well with children
· Feedback from players and parents on previous teams
Not any one of these factors is conclusive on it’s own. Rather all of these factors will be considered in the decision making process and weighed carefully by the Director of Coaching and other committee members that the may be appointed to help.
Excellence as a player does not equate to excellence as a coach. Madison United is looking for individuals who want to be more than coaches; they want to be soccer teachers. Coaches teach you what to do on the field. Soccer teachers impart life lessons through soccer such as good decision-making, fair play, teamwork, and sportsmanship that are applicable in everyday life. Appreciation of soccer can be learned; affinity for young people is a more difficult quality to master.
